Travelling by campervan is always one of the most amazing and unforgettable experiences of my life. It is a truly unique way to experience the Australian countryside and take in the natural beauty of the country while getting a feel for the unique culture.
I love travelling by Campervan or Motorhome especially with a partner – very romantic! These hints and tips will provide you with some ideas to get the most out of your trip.
Choosing a Campervan
When picking a campervan for your trip, there are a few things you will need to take into account. Don’t just go the cheapest! First, if you are tall, make sure to rent a “high top” van, which will allow you to actually stand up inside it; this will make the experience much more comfortable for you.
Next, think about the overall size of the van. Campervans are no more difficult to drive than a normal car, but it is good to practice driving it. Make sure you are confidently able to drive the van before renting.
In addition, make a decision about whether or not you would like a campervan with a stove and fridge. Depending on your travel schedule and personal preferences, you might be able to save more money by cooking your own food. You guys all know how much I love saving money. Ha!
Finally, think about what vehicle uses the less petrol. Gas is very expensive in Australia. So this can keep your budget in check. In fact, I think this is my number one tip, less petrol means more spending money.
Planning and Scheduling
When travelling across Australia, you will need to know your schedule so that you can plan for you will need to pick up supplies and food. Make sure to stock up on food and other supplies at major towns, as it will be cheaper than buying from convenience stores along the way.
I once saw a jar on peanut butter in some random convenience store for $12AU!
When travelling for long distances, it is easy to get caught in the monotony of driving and forget to enjoy yourself. So, instead of sticking to a rigorous schedule, make sure to take time to enjoy yourself.
Try to spend just as much time outside the campervan as in it by doing activities during the day. Any time you stop at a town, make sure to get out and look around, or participate in a few activities. You are on holidays – Enjoy yourself!
You can also step outside the campervan a few times along the road, to take a look at the landscape and take a break from driving…maybe even have a picnic on the road.
When you rush your trip, you can often miss out on fun spontaneous or impulsive opportunities. However, by taking frequent breaks and avoiding a strict schedule, you are sure to get more enjoyment from your trip.
Many hostels have places to park campervans, and you can even use the other available facilities in the hostel as well. This is a great way to find reasonable parking that comes with extra amenities.
Free camping is less common and in some places you will get a fine (annoying!), however if you see a blue sign with RV on it means you can camp there for free. Awesome!
Travelling by campervan is a unique way to go on a trip; they allow you to be flexible in your schedule and get the most enjoyment out of your trip as possible.
I hope these tips will help you plan the perfect trip for you, and will help you plan an unforgettable trip that will be one of the best experiences of your life.
