This surreal landscape of limestone formations will take your breath away, so it&#8217;s definitely worth stopping here to take a few photographs, especially if you&#8217;re visiting during the <a href=\"https:\/\/westernaustraliantravel.com\/best-wildflowers-in-western-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildflower season in Western Australia<\/a>! It&#8217;s 197 kilometres from Perth to Cervantes, which should take you around 2 hours and 10 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another 20 minutes down the road from Cervantes, you&#8217;ll reach Jurien Bay, which is a great spot to grab a coffee and a sausage roll from the bakery and stroll along the jetty to stretch your legs. You can even head down to the beach for an hour or two and enjoy the white sands and turquoise waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve had a good break and feel refreshed, jump back in the car and head towards Port Denison, which is another 131 kilometres down the highway, so this should take you around an hour and 20 minutes, and voila, you&#8217;ve reached your first overnight stop on your Perth to Kalbarri road trip itinerary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of things to do in Port Denison, including heading to the Illegal Tender Rum Co for a distillery tour and tasting session. But if you&#8217;ve got the time, it&#8217;s definitely worth spending the night in Port Denison and then heading to Geraldton the following morning to spend an entire day there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"things_to_do_in_geraldton\"><\/span>Things to do in Geraldton<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned, there are loads to do in Geraldton, including visiting the HMAS Sydney II shipwreck memorial at Mount Scott, which serves to commemorate the 645 crew members who died when the ship sank in 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also several heritage trails in Geraldton, including the Waterfront Trail, which takes you along the foreshore and then on to explore the city&#8217;s historical landmarks. You could also take a drive up to the nearby Greenough Wildlife Park and look out for some of the native Australian wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The St Francis Xavier Cathedral is also an interesting place to visit. It&#8217;s a striking, Gothic Revival building that took 140 years to build. The foundation stone was laid in 1856, and the church actually opened in 1858, but it wasn\u2019t fully completed until 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Museum of Geraldton is also worth checking out to get a better understanding of the region&#8217;s history. Kalbarri National Park contains two landscapes: coastal cliffs and inland gorges, so there&#8217;s plenty to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some great lookouts at the park, where you can see the river meandering through the red gorges below, as well as the turquoise ocean and white beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also do the iconic Nature&#8217;s Window Walk, which is a 1-kilometre out-and-back hike. Allow about 45 minutes for this, as although it&#8217;s pretty short, there is some clambering over rocks involved. Nature&#8217;s Window itself is a stone bridge-like structure with views of the Murchison River and the ocean beyond. You might have to queue for photos here, as it can get busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kalbarri Skywalk is also definitely worth doing, if you&#8217;re feeling brave, as it offers amazing views of the Murchison River and gorge. Try wine at the Swan Valley<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swan Valley is a fantastic wine area, and a tour here is highly recommended if you&#8217;re spending a few days in Perth. We absolutely loved&nbsp;<a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Swan Valley: Full-Day Wine Tour with Lunch\" href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/recommends\/swan-valley-full-day-wine-tour-with-lunch\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">this guided wine tasting<\/a>&nbsp;which includes cheese boards, chocolate and a brewery tour as well as plenty of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_have_a_picnic_at_kings_park\"><\/span>7. Have a picnic at Kings Park<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stroll through Perth&#8217;s most popular park and have a picnic with city views. The botanic gardens are worth a visit to see the wide variety of tropical plants on display here. Just make sure to go on a sunny day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_bike_around_rottnest_island\"><\/span>8. Bike around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/rottnest-island-the-ultimate-backpackers-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rottnest Island<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only have time for one activity in Perth, make sure it&#8217;s a day trip to Rottnest Island. Even if you think two or three days is enough for the road trip, add some extra time just in case, especially if you want to visit Kalbarri at the end. There\u2019s so much to see on the way, and you don\u2019t want to be rushed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take care when wild camping along the way. It\u2019s easy to be fined, and I\u2019d highly recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/read-this-before-you-try-wild-camping-in-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reading our wild camping guide<\/a> before you go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go on a <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Kalbarri Sunset Coastal Cliff Cruise Viator\" href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/recommends\/kalbarri-sunset-coastal-cliff-cruise-viator\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">boat tour<\/a> at least once. You need to see Western Australia from another perspective and the boat tours offered in Kalbarri and Geraldton are fantastic. This one is my favourite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make use of Perth\u2019s free bus system while you\u2019re spending time in the city. Read our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/how-to-get-around-perth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complete public transport guide<\/a>&nbsp;which includes everything you need to know.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid driving just before sunset or in the early mornings. Wildlife accidents are common during this time, especially involving kangaroos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extend your trip and <a href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/best-campsites-and-free-camping-in-coral-bay-wa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drive to Coral Bay<\/a>. This beautiful cove is a must-see in Western Australia and the perfect spot to go camping.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"must-have_things_for_a_perth_to_kalbarri_road_trip\"><\/span>Must-have things for a Perth to Kalbarri road trip<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to take these road trip essentials with you, especially if you&#8217;re camping along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An extra jerry can and a big water jug. The route isn&#8217;t incredibly remote, but you still want to be prepared in case you have car problems or run into unforeseen circumstances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"small esky\" href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/recommends\/small-esky\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">high-quality esky<\/a> that will fit behind your seat. This allows you to access snacks and drinks during the drive without having to stop. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/myaustraliatrip.com\/15-best-camping-chairs-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Folding camping chairs<\/a> &#8211; even if you&#8217;re not planning on camping. You can set up somewhere to sit on the beach and enjoy the sunset in style.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download an offline map of the road trip route from Perth to Kalbarri to your phone on Google Maps or a similar app. Sometimes reception can be unreliable, and you need to know where you&#8217;re going.
